The Humblest of Beginnings

ree

My next poem for Christmas is, "The First Christmas Concert". In this poem I reflect on how God announced His son's birth to the lowliest of low.

"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified." Luke 2:8-10

In biblical times, "The shepherds in Luke’s nativity account further emphasize Jesus’ humble origins, since sheep herding was considered unskilled labor and was relegated to the lower strata of society. Steve Werlin, "Shepherds in the Bible and in Art", n.p. [cited 8 Apr 2020]. Online: https://www.bibleodyssey.org:443/en/passages/related-articles/shepherds-in-the-bible-and-in-art

I just love that God thought out every single detail of His son's birth! I mean in this day and age, everything is a celebration....(We're pregnant, It's a boy, They are Instagram kids, I'm an Influencer, My opinion is more important than yours!" Everyone is so self important and needs the world to know it. God did not take out a billboard or post on Instagram, He communicated it to shepherds! These lowly workers, in their rough clothing and with calloused hands, sat surrounded by their animals in a field and got to watch the announcement of the biggest event history! I'm not sure I would be suited to the life of a shepherd, but I would give anything to have been a lowly shepherd that night.

Next post will be about another Simeon's song.
